He’s already voiced the character in DC animated movies—but now Nathan Fillion (Firefly, pictured above) will fully embody Green Lantern. According to Vanity Fair, he’s one of three actors just cast in James Gunn’s Superman Legacy, joining the previously announced David Corenswet as the Man of Steel and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
Isabela Merced and Edi Gathegi have also joined this burgeoning league of superbuds.
But which Lantern is Fillion suiting up as? That would be Guy Gardner, a fellow described by Vanity Fair as “being somewhat less than heroic” when wielding his shiny ring. Fillion playing cocky and bro-ish against a nice friendly Superman? Makes perfect sense. The actor’s relationship with writer-director James Gunn goes all the way back to Gunn’s first feature, Slither, making this another reunion for them after Fillion’s appearances in The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) will play Hawkgirl, and Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) is Mr. Terrific, aka Michael Holt. Both characters appeared in different versions in the Arrowverse, and Aldis Hodge played Hawkgirl’s frequent partner Hawkman in Black Adam.
One can’t help but wonder if Fillion’s Lantern is long for this new DC universe, or if he’s going to get dramatically killed off in the first few minutes. But that doesn’t quite seem in keeping with the way Gunn has described the tone of his new Superman.
At any rate, Clark Kent won’t be the only superhero on the scene when the reinvented DCU launches.
Superman Legacy is set to premiere in two years, on July 11, 2025.
